Natural Ways to Keep Your Oral Health at Best

Thanks to the advancements in technology and dentistry, it is now easier than ever to have that pearly white teeth you see in the media. But of course, it comes with a cost and multiple visits to the dentist, which may trigger dental anxiety for some.

Having said that, isn’t it great if we can keep our oral health at its best naturally and without having to shell out much money? Well, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve rounded up practical and natural ways to healthier teeth and gums.

Brush and floss regularly

Nothing beats regular tooth brushing and flossing when it comes to keeping your mouth healthy and free from diseases such as tooth decay, gingivitis, and more.

If you want to maintain good oral hygiene, start with brushing your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Use a toothbrush that has soft bristles to prevent gum irritation. And, remember to replace your brush every three months or earlier to keep it clean. Bacteria can easily thrive in your brushes especially if they are damp or not dried properly after using.

Of course, not all areas can be reached by your toothbrush so make sure to floss daily or wash with mouthwash to clean the spaces between your teeth and gums. Thoroughly remove plaque that may build up in your mouth by wrapping your floss around both sides of each tooth and doing a push-pull motion.

Watch your diet

Our body is amazing and although it’s made up of different systems, one part tends to affect another. So if you want to maintain your oral health at best naturally, you better start by watching what you eat.

Numerous studies have suggested against drinking and eating foods that are high in sugar to avoid the development of certain diseases such as diabetes (which is also linked to your oral health, by the way). This advice would also be helpful in keeping your teeth and gums healthy. How? Well, foods that are high in sugar encourage plaque growth which is the number one contributor to tooth decay and other gum problems.

Instead of taking in food and drinks that are high in sugar, consider hydrating yourself with plenty of water and eating a balanced diet loaded with vitamins that will help keep your mouth healthy.

Make sure you get the vitamins you need

Now that we’ve mentioned vitamins, did you know that there are specific vitamins that are good for your gums and teeth?

One example of these vitamins is Vitamin D. Studies suggest that those with vitamin D deficiency are more prone to have gum disease. To make sure that you get enough of vitamin D, try eating eggs, tuna and fortified orange juice. Remember to drink orange juice moderately though as it can also be high in sugar.

Aside from vitamin D, try adding more calcium, vitamin B12 and C into your diet since they are specifically good for the gums.

Do not smoke

Research suggests that tobacco products found in cigarettes are harmful to gum tissues thus exposing smokers to gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. So for naturally healthy teeth and gums, consider quitting smoking gradually.

Use baking soda to fight tooth decay and bad breath

Although not necessarily required, adding baking soda into your oral hygiene kit can be helpful in keeping your mouth healthy. Try brushing your teeth with toothpaste containing baking soda to help fight tooth decay. You can also freshen your breath by mixing half-teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of water.

Consider natural oils that help kill bacteria

Some oils such as tea tree, eucalyptol and menthol can help prevent the growth of bacteria in your mouth and in turn, gum inflammation. You don’t have to take these oils raw, just look for toothpaste and mouthwash with these oils included in the ingredients.
